NEEDILUP SCHOOL

Needilup School opened in 1923 and closed in 1976
The school building was later bought by the Brown's and turned into a shearing shed.

There was an Ongerup, an ‘East’ and ‘North’ Ongerup school. The east one was originally in Ongerup and got taken out to the corner of Brown’s. The Brown’s, McHardy’s and French’s originally purchased the school. Ron and John McHardy had previously walked to Myrtle King’s (Mills) house so she could teach them. Myrtle had gone to Standard 8 in Bunbury. The families wrote and asked for Myrtle to be the teacher, she was given the job and when the Inspector came he passed her, then asked her to transfer to Tambellup. She was paid 2 pounds a week and earned an extra pound by cleaning the school. She walked two and a half miles to school each day in all weather. There were wires strung across the river and she had to walk across them. Myrtle was always afraid they would give way and she would fall in. The other teachers who followed Myrtle were Miss Hopkins, Miss O’Toole and Miss Mahoney.
